FEBE (pronounced feh-beh) visited rosemary beach all the way from TORINO, italy which is also sometimes called TURIN, italy. she speaks italian of course, but she also speaks english PERFECTLY.
when she grows up she would like to be a SINGER. and she says she's pretty good!
she also would like to work in a clothing store. she LOVES clothes!
or perhaps she will be a TEACHER or an ACTRESS!
her favorite american food is definitely MAC & CHEESE. followed closely by shaved ice, twizzlers, and marshmallows. she stocks up on TWIZZLERS and MARSHMALLOWS when she visits the U.S. because she can't get them in italy!
we loved getting to meet FEBE, her mom MANUELA, and her sister REBECCA! CIAO! hope to see you again next year!

yippee, david and i are going on vacation! oh, wait we ARE on vacation! i composed this glob before i left. we are in ITALY. it's our favorite place. we try to go every year. i took these pictures on previous trips. this time we are going back to VENICE (which in italy they call it VENEZIA). this is where they have canals and boats INSTEAD of streets and cars!
we are also going to revisit VERONA. this is the town where the famous ROMEO and JULIET story is set.
we'll spend a short time in LUCCA, a walled city, where everyone rides bikes to get around. even the police officers! that's david on the right hoping he's not getting pulled over for speeding.
then our favorite, VERNAZZA. this place is all about hiking in the mountains, eating lots of really good food, and relaxing by the sea.
and the last stop will be ROME (in italia they say ROMA). this is where you can see the most amazing ancient ruins, including the colosseum pictured above. that's a group of school kids doing an art class in front of it!
here's a map of italy. doesn't it look like a lady's high heel boot kicking a wedge of cheese? i put little hearts next to the five places we are going this time, but we love ALL of italy, really. i don't plan on globbing while i'm on vacation, because first of all, i'm on vacation. and second of all, i'm going to be hiking up mountains and riding trains so i have to pack light. no lap top. and my phone doesn't even work over there.
while i'm there i plan on capturing as much KID friendly italian stuff as possible to share with you when i get back. in the meantime, i have pre-composed (that sounds funny, kind of like decomposed) several globs that will post automatically while i'm gone... including the very important STAR OF THE WEEK which will STILL post every monday. as long as typepad does what it's supposed to!
allora, CIAO! ci vediammo presto!
(so, bye! see you soon!)

when we went to ALAQUA the other day to bring the lemonade stand donations, miss laurie invited us to come "behind the scenes" where she is nursing CHAMP back to health.
CHAMP is a miniature horse who was brought to ALAQUA on august 20 because he was very sick due to starvation. when he first arrived at the refuge, he could not even get up by himself because he was so weak. he is a miniature horse, so he's supposed to be small, but he's definitely NOT supposed to be skinny.
here he is after three weeks with miss laurie hood, the founder of alaqua animal refuge. i know he still looks scrawny, but he looks a whole lot better than before. i can't even bear to look at his picture before.
on this day, he was running around and grazing and enjoying getting petted by the kids. he definitely has more energy and is happy to be alive!
hopefully he will continue to get better and gain more weight. but he still has a long way to go. he seems to really want to get better so that is a great sign. and it's also the reason he is named CHAMP, because he is definitely a fighter!
we got to meet DAISY too. she is also being nursed back to health. she was recently rescued from a pound while diagnosed with heart worms.
she seemed really happy too!
and we also got to meet CHINA! she is a hero because she recently saved miss laurie and her boys from a poisonous snake by barking at it until they could get away safely!
thank you miss laurie and alaqua animal refuge for all you do to help homeless and abused animals!!

SYDNEY is 10 years old. she enjoys taking ballet class and cheerleading. last year, her cheer squad took nationals and i wrote about it here in the kidbits news column.
SYDNEY has been coming to Gigi's since she was really itty bitty. just look at how high the star is over her head in the picture above!
now look! her head almost completely covers the star!
her favorite tv show is ICARLY while her style icon is currently SELENA GOMEZ.
when she grows up, SYDNEY wants to be a lawyer in a big city. maybe LOS ANGELES!
she loves swimming. she pretty spent the entire summer swimming!
now that school has started, SYDNEY has to wear a uniform, except on FREE FRIDAY. that's when she gets to dress up in something really fun! she says she always wears something from Gigi's for the first free friday. aww, how nice!
not only is SYDNEY a star, she is a super awesome big sister to her little brother NACE!

we took some lemonade stand donation money to Alaqua Animal Refuge recently and met some new friends. thought you'd like to meet them too!
this is BOOMER the parrot and he's already found a new home since i took this picture! yay!
bunnies!
caitlin, jada, and jasmine pose in front of CANINE CROSSROADS. this is where you can find a new dog (or two) to love!
one of the newest puppies!
so cute!
this one above is named ROSEMARY!
here's CHOPPER!
this one above is ABBY!
i love LOUISE'S eyes. she looks really smart doesn't she?
this is TILLY!
and BETTY BOOP!
we met many more pups. the only reason i didn't post more is because my photography skills are pretty limited. not all of the photos were very good. but the dogs were! visit the website to see more... or to look up more info on the ones i have featured above.
as we leave CANINE CROSSROADS, we pass by SHADY PASTURES. this is where i adopted my dogs goldie and merle from!
and on to the CAT SHACK!
some of the cats SCRAMMED when they saw the camera, and some of them came in for a closer look.
like this one.
these two bonded.
sorry i didn't catch any of the cats names. they tend to move around a lot and don't wear name tags. but you can look for them here. i'm more of a dog person myself, but i met some really cool cats on this day that i think could possibly convert me!
so we also had the EXTREME privilege of getting to meet CHAMP on this same day. have you heard about him? he is a miniature horse. he was rescued and brought to alaqua animal refuge when he was found starved almost to death. it's incomprehensible what he has been through, but he is getting better at alaqua. if you click on his name above written in green, you can see an article and a video about him. he's been in the news a lot lately. he doesn't know he is famous though. he just knows he is really glad that miss laurie hood, the founder of alaqua, is taking care of him. he is truly a sweet soul.
stay tuned to The Glob for a CHAMP update and pictures very soon!
and check in with the alaqua animal refuge website for more info about any of the animals featured above.

did you catch the episode of "modern family" when claire tried to get the whole family to do a perfect portrait all dressed in pristine white? then a mud fight broke loose, but the family just kept posing. i LOVED that.
wouldn't it be so much fun to do SILLY family portraits.
like with adhesive mustaches or wax lips or something.
THAT would be memorable.
but with a for REAL photographer. like this one.

Hi there, fellow globbers! My name is Cocoa and I am absolutely delighted to be writing this post for you. I live in Alabama, but my family and I have been coming to the 30-A area several times a year for as long as I can remember. One of the reasons I love it so much is because it’s a great place to take pictures. That’s right, I’m a photographer! I’m only 16 years old, but a lot of times I even get paid to do portraits!
I take pictures of just about everything, but my favorite subjects are definitely people. In fact, I want to be a portrait photographer when I grow up. It’s great how you can capture a person’s whole personality in a simple picture. Our expressions really do say a lot about our character, you know.
I don’t remember exactly when I started getting serious about taking pictures, but I do know it happened rather quickly. I started off using my mom’s tiny digital camera, but nowadays I have a really big one that I have to carry around my neck with a strap. It’s kind of silly, but it even has a name! Somehow i started referring to my camera as "Ish". I also have a bunch of different lenses and equipment for "Ish".
If you want to be a photographer as well, practice as much as you can! Just like painters and artists, photographers all have their own unique style. Taking lots of pictures can help you discover what yours is. Also, make sure you know how to work your camera and do lots of research on it. Soon enough you’ll be taking fantastic photos!
that's my own pet hedgehog finnegan!
hope you have enjoyed my photos!
you can see even more at my flickr account.
left, cocoa when she was just a little girl visiting miss gigi.
right, a more recent cocoa posing with her camera "ish"!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
update: COCOA now has her own blog and website!
