JESS is 9 years old and wants to be a vet
when she grows up because she loves animals!
she has two dogs BODHI and BRUTUS...
she enjoys horse back riding, ice skating, basketball,
playing with friends, and going to the beach...
her favorite food is shrimp,
favorite color is purple,
and she likes to ride her bike to sugar shak
to get her favorite candy AIRHEADS!

i went on a trip to the continent of AFRICA recently!
more specifically, i went to the countries of
ZIMBABWE and SOUTH AFRICA...
my husband was actually born and raised in zimbabwe,
and this was the first time i got to see his hometown...
the whole experience was amazing,
and i thought you kids might appreciate
seeing all the animals i met!
that's a picture of me in the safari vehicle
that we drove in when we went to
hwange national park game reserve...
i was afraid to get out of the vehicle
because it was rumored that a lion might be near!
before going to hwange,
we stayed at victoria falls, zimbabwe...
these are warthogs that we saw from our hotel balcony!
some people we saw
that actually paid to get in a pool with a crocodile!
these are the baboons that i encountered
when i was out for my morning jog!!
this rhino is not real...
this is victoria falls national park!
(not really an animal)
these are impala (they were a little camera shy)
we went for a sunset cruise on the zambezi river
and saw these elephants from our boat!
and these hungry hippos!
then we went to hwange national park for the safari...
this is where we drove around in that cute little jeep
with nothing but a few bars between us and the animals!
right off the bat we saw these beautiful giraffes!
and more impala
lots of zebras!
so many exotic birds including this lilac breasted roller!
this chart shows what you can expect
animals to be doing at different times of the day...
look at all the elephants...
i was surprised that they are so quiet!
we saw these ostriches racing...
darn, i can't remember what this guy was called,
but isn't he cute!?
elephant pool party!
our driver stays clear of the elephant on the road!
these signs are posted to remind you to watch out!
baboons climbing on the electricity lines
to hide from the leopards below...
more warthogs...
this guy was nicknamed the flying banana
but he's really called a yellow-billed hornbill...
this kudu looked surprised to see us!
this is a dwarf mongoose... he was so tiny!
zebra crossing!
i spotted this water buck from my tent!
upon leaving hwange,
this is the gate that let's cars in and out of the park.
by the way, there are no fences at the park.
the animals are free to come and go as they please!
this adorable and not so scary pup greeted us
when we arrived to the mountain village
of juliasdale, zimbabwe!
and then we flew to capetown, south africa
where they have a HUGE penguin population!
we went to a beach where there were penguins
every where you looked!
and a super cute turtle? tortoise? terrapin?
penguin with eggs!
i have to admit i was a little surprised by the penguins...
i always think of penguins in cold and snow,
but here they were living super comfortably
at a sunny beach in south africa.
i hope you enjoyed seeing all the animals
i encountered in africa!

we look a little soggy don't we?
this is right after we completed the ice bucket challenge
for FOOD FOR THOUGHT
which is a wonderful non-profit
that provides food and meals to local children in need.
a couple of the founders issued a challenge...
they each poured a bucket of ice water on their heads
and videotaped it for all to see,
while challenging three more people to do the same,
AND of course to send in a donation!
one of them challenged
local photographer JACKIE WARD
who then challenged our own MISS COCOA
who then challenged ME....
it's interesting to see how far down the line it goes,
and it spreads exponentially!
Cocoa and I decided to take our cold water plunge
in front of Gigi's...
you know, in the middle of a day at work.
and as you can see from the following videos,
we inspired a few more adventurous and giving
people who asked if they could take the challenge too!
see more local #icebucketchallenge videos
on the FOOD FOR THOUGHT facebook page!
and if this looks like your idea of fun,
consider yourself challenged!
proceed to dump a bucket of ice water on your head
and send them a check, pronto! :)
(you can even donate online HERE!)
